A Small Box That Decides Whether the Bank Survives
Charge controllers rarely appear in a project headline, yet they decide how much of the array’s output reaches the battery and how long that battery lasts. A maximum power point tracking unit converts a higher array voltage down to the bank voltage while holding the array at its best operating point; a basic PWM unit simply switches the array across the battery. On a cold morning with a long string, that difference is not academic.
The commercial reason to care is simpler: this is the part of a solar system that a distributor can stock, quote and reorder with a short approval cycle. Buyers are installers, off-grid integrators, telecom and remote-power operators, and rural electrification programmes. Our equipment sourcing hub places it in the wider BOM; our battery storage guide covers the bank it has to protect.
Three Mismatches Behind Most Returns
The first is voltage headroom. Open-circuit voltage rises as temperature falls, and a string sized to the controller’s limit on a warm afternoon can exceed it on a cold morning. Ask for the calculation with the array’s Voc and Isc, the site’s record low and the controller’s stated maximum. The second is the charge profile: a lead-acid absorb and float routine applied to a lithium iron phosphate bank is a slow way to damage cells. The third is communication, where a controller that cannot report state of charge over CAN or RS485 leaves the monitoring platform blind.
None of these show up in a product photograph. All three can be settled with a one-page specification and one functional sample. Ask the factory to state the accepted battery chemistries, the charge algorithm, temperature sensing and limits, the protection functions, and the exact telemetry protocol. Our factory verification process describes how that evidence is recorded before a deposit moves.
Documents and the Boundary of What They Prove
Electrical safety, electromagnetic behaviour and restricted substances are separate references, and the destination mark your channel asks for is a further layer. A safety report for a controller does not approve the battery connected to it, and a RoHS declaration does not describe firmware behaviour. Ask for the report, the laboratory, the model on its cover and the date, then match those four to the nameplate and carton label. We gather and sort the files, flag mismatches and issue nothing ourselves; a licensed broker or qualified local adviser should settle the final market position.
Two destination rules are easy to miss. In the United States the low-value parcel exemption has been suspended, so a single unit sent to a consumer carries a different cost structure; our US de minimis guide explains the mechanism. Selling into the EU means identifying an economic operator and putting required information into the online offer, with battery and waste duties handled separately; our Germany guide covers that side.
| Configuration choice | Why it moves the quote | Evidence to request |
|---|---|---|
| Stocked controller model | Existing reports, quickest sample route | Model-matched report set and a sample from the running line |
| Artwork, box or manual change | Own print minimum, separate from controller quantity | Approved artwork, translated manual, carton drop check |
| Firmware or protocol change | New approval file and joint communication test | Versioned firmware record, protocol document, test log |
| New enclosure or terminals | Tooling, pilot run, fresh safety evidence | Tooling ownership, updated reports, revised labels |
Functional Testing Beats a Visual Check
Looking at a unit is not testing it. Agree a written protocol before the deposit: sample size, sampling basis, acceptance criteria, a wired run with the intended bank chemistry, a low-temperature start-up check, MPPT tracking behaviour, protection trips, telemetry reporting and verification of the label and packaging. Settle who funds rework and who signs the release. Our pre-shipment inspection service explains how that record is captured on a running batch.
Private Label and the Second Supply Chain
Branding is mostly a packaging project here: a printed box, a manual in the required languages and an approved label set can change without touching the electronics. Custom packaging creates its own schedule and its own minimum unrelated to the controller quantity, so treat those as separate line items. Our private label guide and packaging guide mark where artwork ends and a controlled hardware change begins.
Freight and the Consolidation Logic
Controllers are small and dense, which makes them the ideal companion to a bulky racking or BOS order. Pairing them into one consolidated shipment with one customs entry usually improves the position for both, and it is the natural bridge from a trial quantity to a standing line. We arrange consolidation, export paperwork, clearance and final delivery, and name the importer of record in writing. Our origin-side preparation service covers labelling and packing for fulfilment centres.
Send the bank voltage and chemistry, array configuration, market and quantity breaks, telemetry needs, artwork and manual languages, the documents your channel expects, and whether samples come first. Send an enquiry or use either WhatsApp button. We publish no unit price, minimum, delivery window or duty amount on a public page.
Frequently asked questions
MPPT or PWM for a lithium bank?
For most higher-voltage strings, MPPT recovers energy a PWM unit wastes, but the more important check is that the charge profile is genuinely written for lithium iron phosphate. Ask for the algorithm and verify it on a wired sample rather than trusting a feature list.
Will it talk to our monitoring platform?
Only if the protocol matches. Send the interface you use, and we will ask the factory for the protocol document and a joint reporting test. Higher-end units offer CAN or RS485 telemetry; basic units simply charge to their set points.
Can you supply a small trial quantity?
Yes, and the same approval file can govern a later batch. Our low MOQ guide explains how to frame the factory conversation so the first order is not priced as a one-off.
Do you provide the certificates?
We collect reports and declarations from the maker and the laboratory, check that they name the quoted model and flag anything outdated. We issue nothing and offer no legal opinion; have a licensed broker confirm the final position for your market.

It helps to name the battery chemistry and charge profile, PV string Voc and Isc, whether CAN or RS485 telemetry is needed, artwork and manual languages, and the reports your channel expects. A wiring photo or a link to the current listing is enough to begin.
